F5Bot Review 2026: Plans, Real Limits and the Catch

What F5Bot actually does

F5Bot watches three places, Reddit, Hacker News and Lobste.rs, for words you give it, and emails you when one appears. It reads both posts and comments, and matches against submission titles, URLs and comment bodies. Its FAQ says it checks for new content every few minutes, so an alert usually lands a few minutes after the post does.

It was built in 2017 by Lewis Van Winkle and is run by F5Bot LLC. Its own About page says it sends over 430,000 alerts a day, and the free tier exists because he built the thing for himself first.

It is worth being clear about what it is not, because this is where most people are disappointed. There is no dashboard, no charts, no grouping of similar conversations, and no way to search what was said before you added the keyword. It does not read X, news sites or the wider web. It does not support regular expressions or wildcards. It is an alert pipe, and a good one.

Is F5Bot free in 2026?

Yes, partly, and this is the question Google itself puts at the top of the results for F5Bot. There is a genuinely free plan you can use without entering payment details, marked for personal use. It is not the whole product: F5Bot now sells four paid tiers above it, and several reviews still describe it as a single free tool.

One free-plan limit is easy to miss until it bites: F5Bot's FAQ says free accounts cannot monitor very common words or phrases at all. If your keyword is rejected for being too common, the fix on offer is a paid plan.

The catch: a busy keyword switches itself off

Every plan has two ceilings, not one. There is a cap on alerts across your whole account each day, and a separate cap on how many alerts a single keyword may generate in 24 hours. On the free plan that second number is 10.

A keyword that goes over its limit will be disabled. You can manually re-enable it from your account.

So the failure mode is silence. The keyword you care about most, the busy one, is the first to hit its ceiling, and then you hear nothing until you notice and switch it back on. F5Bot is honest about this in its own FAQ, which is more than most tools manage:

F5Bot is designed to alert you about fairly uncommon keywords or phrases. If you're trying to monitor a very popular brand, this might not be the right tool for you.

How busy is too busy?

It helps to put the cap next to real community volume. On 16 September 2026 we measured six business communities with our own subreddit stats tool, using the counters Reddit publishes on each community page. In one week they produced 34,205 posts and comments between them: r/SaaS 12,109, r/smallbusiness 11,348, r/webdev 5,076, r/startups 2,476, r/Entrepreneur 2,335 and r/marketing 861.

r/SaaS alone is about 1,730 posts and comments a day. A keyword that appears in just 1% of them produces roughly 17 matches a day, which is already past the free plan's 10 and half of Silver's 30. That is one community. A word like "CRM", "Notion" or your own category name across all of Reddit is far past it.

The practical reading: the free plan is for your brand name, your domain, or a phrase only your customers would type. Anything broader needs Silver at the very least, and probably Gold.

What each plan really costs per keyword

Gold is the value plan: $0.25 per keyword against Silver's $0.50. Platinum looks like a strange jump, $214.99 for only 100 more keywords, until you look at the other column. Per daily alert it costs about $0.001 against Gold's $0.010, roughly a tenth. Platinum is not sold for keywords, it is sold for volume: 200,000 alerts a day and a 500-a-day cap per keyword.

So pick your plan by the number that will actually break first. If you are tracking a handful of rare phrases, the free plan or Silver is enough forever. If you are tracking a common product name, you are buying alert volume, and the ladder runs Gold then Platinum.

One more cost to know: AI filtering, which matches on a description instead of exact words, includes the first $10 a month of token usage on the plans that have it. Beyond that it is billed on top of the plan.

Setting it up so it stays useful

Most complaints about F5Bot are really setup problems. Its flags are plain text you add next to the keyword, and five of them do most of the work:

• only-url=/r/yoursubreddit limits a keyword to the communities you care about. Add it several times for several subreddits, and do not combine it with only-reddit, which matches all of Reddit and cancels the point.
• no-url=/r/politics/ drops the communities that produce noise for you.
• whole stops a keyword matching inside longer words, so "thing" no longer matches "something".
• in-title, in-body, in-url (paid) decide where the keyword must appear, which is the cure for the classic "why did I get this match?" email.
• group=name (paid) bundles several alerts into one email instead of several.

1. 1Start with three to five specific phrases, not single common words. Your brand, your domain, a competitor, and the phrasing your customers use.
2. 2Add only-url flags for the two or three communities where those conversations actually happen.
3. 3Post your keyword once in Reddit's test subreddit to confirm alerts arrive, which F5Bot's FAQ suggests as the check.
4. 4After a week, look at which keyword produced the most noise, then narrow it with whole or in-title rather than deleting it.
5. 5Check your account page for keywords that have been disabled. That is the sign you have outgrown the plan.

F5Bot alternatives, with real prices

The verdict

F5Bot is the best free thing in this category and has been for nine years. For a brand name, a domain or a rare phrase, the free plan is genuinely all you need, and no other tool here gives you that without a card.

It stops fitting the moment your keyword becomes popular. The per-keyword cap disables it, the 7-day match history on the cheaper plans means you cannot look back, and there is no filtering worth the name below Gold. At that point you are choosing between Gold at $49.99 and a tool built for noisy keywords.
